Chevrolet Brake Fluid Exchange Service Omaha, NE

What does Brake Fluid Do?

Brake fluid is a major part of the hydraulic system in your car’s braking system. The fluid forces pistons in the brake cylinders to push the brake pads against the rotors when you press down on the pedal to stop the car. As you take your foot off of the pedal, the pressure on the piston is released and the fluid flows back into a chamber as the pads recede from the face of the rotor so you can move again. Making sure the fluid stays in good shape is very important in places like Omaha, Nebraska, where it gets humid in the summer and severe cold, snow, and ice in the winter.

What You Get with the Service

The environmental conditions increase the chance moisture, air, and other contaminants will seep into the fluid in when the brake parts wear down. As a part corrodes or wears out from usage, little openings often develop in it which can allow outside contaminants to enter through it and into the fluid in the braking system. The easiest way to tell if your fluid needs changing is by inspecting it in the master cylinder.

How to Tell When it’s Time to Come in for Service

Bad brake fluid can cause a few different problems that lead to the brakes failing on your car when you least expect it. An inspection can alert you to the following issues with your brake fluid.

  • If the level of the fluid is too low, this is a sign that at least one part in the system has deteriorated to the point where fluid can leak out of it.
  • The color of the fluid will alert you to contamination and other problems. Cloudy fluid indicates water has gotten into the system while a dark color indicates the fluid has passed its useful life and needs to be changed.

If the fluid and parts deteriorate, it will affect the ability of the brakes to work well over time and the conditions will only get worse. In time, it will affect your ability to stop your car. This is why you should have a brake fluid exchange service done on your Chevrolet about every 45,000 miles (unless your service manual states otherwise).
