The battery in your vehicle has an important job to do. It stores energy inside of it to use when you start your engine by supplying power to the engine. As soon as the engine starts running, the battery is no longer supplying power, but the alternator supplies power at this time. The battery gets more power from the voltage regulator when it sends fresh power back to the battery to be stored until you need to start your engine again. Vehicle batteries last several years before they start to fail, but they do need to be replaced.
There are several signs to be aware of that signal you to have your battery checked or replaced. If your battery is starting to fail, it can’t fully power the electrical components in your car. One of the telltale signs is when your headlights appear dim. If your battery is failing, you may hear a clicking sound when you turn on the ignition key and it takes longer to start than normal from the starter receiving insufficient power. Your car may need gas to start it if your battery is failing, when it doesn’t normally take any gas to start. You may notice backfiring due to intermittent sparks that lead to fuel accumulating in the cylinders of your engine. When the extra fuel ignites, it does so with great force and leads to backfiring.
If you have noticed any sign of a failing battery and don’t get it replaced, there can be consequences. If your headlights are dim, it could cause an auto accident when you can’t see properly and other drivers don’t see you. If you keep trying to crank your engine with a low battery, it will remove any bit of energy left in the battery and you will not be able to start your car at all. Keep in mind, that you can get a jump-start on your battery just to start the engine, but this isn’t a solution as it won’t be able to store more energy from the alternator.
